Liverpool are known to have many iconic songs being sung at Anfield down the years, with ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ by Gerry and the Pacemakers, the club’s official anthem.
Others include ‘Poor Scouser Tommy’, ‘The Fields of Anfield Road’, ‘Oh Campione’ and one of more recent times that resignates with the younger generation, ‘Allez, Allez, Allez’, famously since 2018.
But, supporters have opted to bring back a chant of old, that has been doing the rounds in recent weeks inside the ground, and away from home.
This song is ‘A Liverbird Upon My Chest’ and we will be diving further into the deep history that is involved, including the reason why it has sprung back onto the Kop, after decades without.
WHERE DOES THE SONG ORIGINATE FROM?
Back in the mid-1980’s, a man named Phil Aspinall delivered ‘A Liverbird Upon My Chest’ and has with the Liverpool faithful since.
The crowd can be heard singing the same four lines, on repeat:
“A Liverbird upon my chest (Upon my chest)
We are the men, of Shankly’s best (Of Shankly’s best)
A team that plays the Liverpool way
And wins the Championship in May.”
This chorus acts as a rallying cry to the players on the pitch, but also as a gentle reminder to the club’s identity, symbolising the ‘Liverpool Way.’
‘The Liverpool Way’ is a philosophy that has been instilled since the late seventies.
From the culture, to the bond between players and supporters, it signifies a commitment to a style of play that prioritises attacking football and working together as a team, and the use of the fans as their twelfth-man.
The tune pays a tribute to the legendary, Bill Shankly, who laid the foundations for Liverpool to thrive into present day, but also pays respect to many others who have contributed to the success.
These include, Bob Paisley, Joe Fagan, Ian St.John, and Sir Kenny Dalglish throughout the whole twenty-one verses, that if sung at the correct pace, can last for up to seven minutes inside Anfield.
WHY HAS IT RE-EMERGED?
Not many classic chants are still around in this era where songs tend to be dashed around from club-to-club, all creating their own versions, but, ‘A Liverbird Upon My Chest’ only resignates with Liverpool supporters.
The song made a return in the UEFA Champions League defeat to PSV Eindhoven last month, as the ‘Travelling Kop’ could be heard chanting the well-known chorus for the majority, as a rotated side went onto lose.
Since then.
the tune has stuck ever since, including fantastic renditions during the recent victories against Manchester City at the Etihad and Newcastle at Anfield.
‘A Liverbird Upon My Chest’ only begins to be echoed when the team are on the verge of success, and right now, under Arne Slot, Liverpool couldn’t be in a better place.
The Reds are thirteen points clear at the Premier League summit, looking destined to win the title, whilst advancing to the latter stages of the Champions League, facing Paris Saint-Germain as well as a Carabao Cup Final date against Newcastle United, to look ahead to.
This could all seem a little familiar as to when Bob Paisley took over from Bill Shankly, and went onto win thirteen major honours in nine years, including six league titles and three European Cups.
The same passing of the torch could happen from Jürgen Klopp to Arne Slot, with the German laying a solid foundation that Slot has eased himself into, gaining deserved success.
‘A Liverbird Upon My Chest’ could prove to be the song that carries the Reds over the finish line in their battle for the major trophies this season.
