The ending to the final Merseyside derby at Goodison Park couldn not have been much more dramatic as Everton snatched an injury-time equalizer to steal a point from Liverpool in a pulsating 2-2 draw.
Only five minutes of added-on time was indicated by the officials but an on-field injury saw that extended and resulted in James Tarkowski slamming in a powerful strike beyond Alisson in the 98th minute.
It sparked jubilant scenes as the Everton fans ran on to the pitch to celebrate with the players.
They even had two cracks at the whip with a VAR check then confirming the goal and resulting a second outpouring of emotions.
Unsurprisingly, there was an emotional reaction from the players at full-time.
But it was Abdoulaye Doucoure who stoked tensions at the end of the game when he sprinted over to the Liverpool fans to celebrate.
Curtis Jones took exception and sprinted towards the Everton midfielder, grabbing him from behind and then the players grappled and had to be restrained by team-mates.
Both players were shown second yellow cards by referee Michael Oliver in a dramatic finish to the derby.
Stewards had to be called in to calm the players down, although it wasn't the end of altercations.
Arne Slot, who was furious that Everton's equalizer was allowed to stand as he felt there was a foul on Ibrahima Konate in the build-up, was shown a straight red for something he said to the referee at full-time.
The disagreements continued as the players made their way off the pitch with both sets of players clearly infuriated.
The result means Everton move up to 15th in the table while Liverpool remains top.
