Liverpool failed in their bid to reclaim their Carabao Cup title after a 2-1 loss against Newcastle United in the final.

Eddie Howe’s side were the better side on the night as the Magpies outplayed Liverpool from the first whistle onwards, with Dan Burn and Alexander Isak for Newcastle in what was a one-sided final at Wembley Stadium.

With Mohamed Salah’s impact minimal after picking up a knock, Liverpool fans will have every right to be frustrated with the performance, with the Reds now set to end the season with just one trophy in the Premier League title.

And for Jamie Carragher, one moment from a Liverpool player against Newcastle this afternoon left the pundit baffled.

Speaking on Sky Sports coverage of the match, Alexis Mac Allister was heavily criticised for his lack of action in Newcastle’s opening goal, with Carragher accusing the £35m-rated Liverpool midfielder of ball-watching.

Carragher said about the opening goal: “I think they could look at the fact they keep targeting Dan Burn and maybe swap Jota and Mac Allister.

What that’s about I’ll never know and he just loses the flight of the ball.

His job there is not to really beat him in the air, just put him off and make sure he doesn’t get a clear header, but he’s not even watching the ball.

Jota’s far better in the air and it would have been a lot more difficult.”

With Liverpool backed to win the quadruple as recently as a month ago, today’s loss at Wembley Stadium was a stark reminder to the Reds that things can change very quickly in football despite how high a team might be flying.

And this afternoon’s cup final loss against Newcastle will serve as a big wake-up call for Liverpool heading into the final two months of the season in preparation for the new campaign, where Arne Slot will be determined to right his wrongs from this year.

Indeed, Liverpool went into this cup final with an arrogance that will go punished by the right team, and Newcastle did just that, with the Magpies giving the Reds a lesson they will not forget for quite some time.
