Liverpool are at the very top of the Champions League table after a commanding 4-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen.

Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso subdued Anfield in the first half, with the former Liverpool icon doing a fine job in the opening stages.

The two clubs went into the break level at 0-0, but Arne Slot and his players soon turned on the charm in the second half of the Champions League tie.

Luis Diaz fired in a fantastic hat-trick and Cody Gakpo was also on target in the 4-0 thrashing, which leaves the Reds on four wins from four in Europe.

A tough test was on the cards against Bayer Leverkusen and Alonso, but in the end the home side were allowed to run riot at Anfield.

Alonso would have been in high spirits at the break, with the German club having been more than in the game at that stage.

And his relaxed nature walking out for the second half was captured by Anfield Social on X, with Alonso touching the This Is Anfield sign before shaking hands with Andy Robertson and embracing him before a brief conversation down the tunnel.

Steven Gerrard loved seeing Alonso at Anfield, with the Spaniard having spent several successful years on Merseyside.

And he even looked like playing the villain against his former club, with Bayer Leverkusen enjoying a strong start to the match.

But a stunning opener for Diaz on the hour mark relaxed the home side, with Gakpo on hand to double their lead shortly after.

The former then netted two more goals late on to complete the rout, with Liverpool sending a real message to all the other Champions League teams with the result as they moved to 12 points.

Sporting Lisbon and Monaco are the nearest clubs on 10 points, with the former giving the Anfield fans another reason to celebrate by thrashing their Premier League rivals Man City 4-1.
