Liverpool managed to survive a Paris Saint-Germain onslaught during their UEFA Champions League last-16 first leg at the Parc des Princes and snatch victory at the death via super-sub, Harvey Elliott, but will have their goalkeeper to thank, with Alisson Becker proving unbeatable.

The Brazilian’s display was one of the all-time great goalkeeping performances and we will be discussing why Alisson’s status as the world’s best, won’t be slipping away anytime soon.

SUPER-HUMAN

For the vast majority of his Liverpool career, Alisson Becker has been phenomenal and the Reds needed another world-class display from their goalkeeper on Wednesday.

Many would label Liverpool’s performance as the worst they have seen under Arne Slot so far, as his side struggled to live with the attacking threat of Paris Saint-Germain, and would have been well beaten had it not been for Alisson.

He faced twenty-seven shots, making ten saves whilst denying Khvicha Kvaratskhelia on four occasions and kept out man-in-form, Ousmane Dembele, twice.

Alisson recorded the most saves on record since 2003/04, by a Liverpool goalkeeper in a single Champions League match, whilst beating his previous European record of nine.

The clean sheet has also meant that the Brazilian has now kept more Champions League clean sheets than any other Liverpool goalkeeper, with 22, surpassing Pepè Reina.

Question marks had been raised over Alisson since returning from a two-month injury absence in December.

Understoody, Caoimhin Kelleher performed greatly when called upon and it seemed that when Alisson did return, Liverpool started to ship more goals, resulting in unfamiliar scrutiny.

But, those doubts can now be put to rest after the goalkeeper’s outstanding showing on Wednesday night.

SLOT HAILS ALISSON HEROICS

Arne Slot was quick to praise Alisson, following his sensational display in Paris.

He said, “I don’t think I have ever worked with a goalkeeper at this level before, which is normal because he is the best in the world.”

“I have had some very good players as a manager but never the best goalkeeper in the world, until now.”

Giorgi Mamardashvili will officially arrive from Valencia in the summer and Slot’s decision on the battle for the number one spot, could be made a lot more difficult.

Upon arrival, the Georgian has sent words of warning for Alisson, suggesting that while he is respectful of the goalkeeper, he does not see himself as anything other than a number one.

Although, after witnessing his opposite number at the Parc des Princes, he may have to put that ambition on hold for now.

Alisson’s contract at Liverpool is due to expire in 2026, though there is an option to extend a further year, whilst Caoimhin Kelleher is expected to leave in search of regular playing time.

Alisson Becker has become a monumental figure of Liverpool’s success since arrival in 2018 and seven years on, he remains in his prime.

Emiliano Martinez may have won back-to-back awards for the world’s best goalkeeper, but the reality is that the man most deserving of such award is playing for Liverpool Football Club.

Alisson has single-handedly helped his side take a huge leap towards the Quarter-Final of the European Cup.
