Darwin Nunez was at the centre of the action in Liverpool's match with Southampton on Saturday afternoon in what was his first Premier League start since Boxing Day.

It's been a turbulent campaign for the Uruguayan, who had six goals and six assists to his name prior to the weekend's match at Anfield.

His first-half performance against the Saints encapsulated frustrations as he was lucky to evade a red card for a challenge on Kyle Walker-Peters shortly after Liverpool conceded the opening goal.

VAR checked the flashpoint and confirmed the on-field decision of a yellow card, but it was a disappointing 45 minutes from the striker.

Sensing the discontent, Southampton fans wasted no time in taunting Nunez with X-rated Andy Carroll chants.

However, that ultimately back-fired on their part.

It's not the first time Southampton supporters have attempted to wind up the Liverpool forward.

Similar chants echoed around St Mary's Stadium in December during the Carabao Cup quarter-final, in which Nunez opened the scoring and silenced the crowd with a shushing celebration.

Although Liverpool found themselves 1-0 down at half-time during this weekend's Premier League meeting, they were quick to turn things around following a much-needed half-time team talk from head coach Arne Slot.

Six minutes into the second half, Nunez turned in a cross from Luis Diaz to put the Reds back on level terms.

The Egyptian scored from the spot a second time late on after VAR intervened to award another spot-kick, ensuring that Liverpool walked away with a comfortable 3-1 win.
