Liverpool will be facing AC Milan at the San Siro this evening to kick-off the UEFA Champions League season, but it will be a Milan side without former Reds man Divock Origi.

Divock Origi’s Liverpool career was marked by his status as a cult hero, known for delivering in crucial moments, particularly during big games.



He joined Liverpool in 2014 from Lille for a fee of around £10 million but spent the 2014/15 season back on loan with the French club.

Upon his arrival at Anfield, Origi initially found opportunities limited, often playing a backup role in Liverpool’s attacking lineup.

Despite not being a regular starter, Origi became synonymous with iconic moments that endeared him to Liverpool fans.

One of his earliest impactful performances came in the 2015/16 season when he scored against Borussia Dortmund in the Europa League quarter-final, helping Liverpool to one of their famous comebacks under manager Jürgen Klopp.

His most celebrated contributions came during the 2018/19 season.

Origi etched his name into Liverpool folklore with his heroics in the UEFA Champions League.

First, he scored a dramatic 96th-minute winner in the Merseyside Derby against Everton in December 2018.

However, his defining moments came in the Champions League semi-final second leg against Barcelona.

Origi scored two goals, including the famous quick-corner finish, to overturn the deficit and propel Liverpool to the final.

He then went on to score the second goal in Liverpool’s 2-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in the final, cementing his status as a club legend – something Jurgen Klopp himself labelled.

But it seems the former Belgian international will not have a chance to catch-up with his former teammates, at least not on the pitch.

Divock Origi experiencing tough time in AC Milan

By the time he left Liverpool in the summer of 2022, Origi had made 175 appearances for the club, scoring 41 goals.

His contributions, especially during the 2018/19 Champions League run, left a lasting legacy and secured his place as a beloved figure among the Liverpool faithful?.

But his ill-fated switch to AC Milan has led the 29-year-old’s career to stagnate

When Liverpool plays Milan in the Champions League on Tuesday, Origi won’t be in the starting lineup – or even in the match day squad either; Origi isn’t even on Milan’s senior team anymore?

Liverpool’s prized super-sub, who arrived in Italy just two years ago, is now languishing in the Rossoneri reserves.

Former AC Milan striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who is now a senior advisor at the club, has already confirmed that Origi will not be in the first team for this season:

“Origi and [Fode] Ballo-Toure have been called up, but they will play for Milan Futuro (the reserve team).”

“They are not part of the first team project.”

It’s then a sad state of affairs for the Belgian, whose plan to leave Liverpool for more minutes not really working out so far.

Origi has not even made one appearance for the Rossoneri’s reserve team, which plays in Serie C and is primarily made up of Under-23 players.
