Why Inter Milan boss Simone Inzaghi turned down chance to manage Liverpool before Arne Slot joined

Liverpool supporters would be forgiven for feeling a pang of jealousy during Wednesday night’s Champions League matches.

The Reds were one of the favourites to win this year’s tournament having swept to first place in the league standings.

However, after running into an in-form PSG in the last-16, Liverpool saw their dreams ended prematurely.

With PSG joining Arsenal, Barcelona and Inter Milan in the semi-finals, the French side now have a good chance of winning the competition for the first time.

But Liverpool fans have decided to back Inter for the trophy, deducing that the Italian’s winning could hand Mohamed Salah a better chance of landing the Ballon d’Or.

Simone Inzaghi’s team certainly stand a chance having impressively beaten Bayern Munich in the quarters.

And as the world wakes up to just how good a coach Inzaghi is, it’s worth a reminder that he was in the running to succeed Jurgen Klopp last summer.

Inzaghi has done a wonderful job at Inter.

After taking the reins in 2021, the former midfielder has led the Nerazzurri to a league title and two Coppa Italia.

As the current champions of Serie A, they look well placed to retain their championship and sit three points clear of Napoli at the top of the table.

Also in the Coppa Italia semi against local rivals AC Milan, Inter have a chance at recreating Jose Mourinho’s famous treble of 2010.

But had things taken a different turn, Inzaghi could have ended up at Anfield.

As reported by the Italian press in March 2024, Inzaghi was in the running to replace Klopp.

This was back before Arne Slot even came into the frame at all.

And although the Liverpool owners were surely already zoning in on Slot, Gazzetta dello Sport reported that Inzaghi had a chance, too.

However, they claimed that ‘for family and sporting reasons’ the 49-year-old was not interested in taking over at Anfield.

Ultimately, it’s impossible to argue that Liverpool made the wrong choice in any way by going with Slot last summer.

The Dutchman has been a revelation with the Reds and stands on the verge of winning the Premier League title at the first attempt.

It seems improbable that many other managers would have been able to deliver the same.

Nevertheless, we think Inzaghi is one of the few who would have stood a chance at coming close.
