Back-to-back victories over Ipswich Town and Brentford in Arne Slot's first two games have since been followed up by the capture of goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia, while plans are now afoot to bring in Federico Chiesa from Juventus.

Mamardashvili will spend the current campaign at Valencia before moving next summer, having officially become the first addition of the summer window on Tuesday evening.

Now the attention turns to Chiesa as the Reds look to bring in further reinforcements before Friday's 11pm deadline.

While news of Liverpool's pursuit of Federico Chiesa might have caught a few by surprise on Monday evening, a closer look at the situation shows it to be very much in line with what the Reds have been aiming to do this summer transfer window.

Having wrapped up a £29m deal for Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia, in an agreement that will see the Georgia international goalkeeper remain with los Che for the current campaign, the Reds are now pressing ahead with the capture of Chiesa, who has been on the peripheral at Juventus this summer.

The versatile forward's stock has dropped since Italy's successful 2021 European Championship, where he was one the Azzurri's standout performers but at 26, Chiesa still has a lot to offer.

He was sidelined for nine months after that problem.

Chiesa did feature 33 times last term for Juve last term, however, and was fit enough to be part of the Italy squad for the Euros earlier this summer and there are plenty of reasons for why the deal fits within the parameters of Richard Hughes's "opportunistic" strategy for Liverpool this summer.

Frozen out by, Chiesa hasn't featured so far this term and is inside the final year of his contract having joined in October 2020 on an initial two-year loan from Fiorentina, which came with an obligation to make it permanent at €50million (£42m).

Now thought to be available for around the £15m mark, the upside of landing a star of Italian football for such a relatively modest sum appeals and Arne Slot will back himself to get the frontman into the sort of form that made him such a hot commodity just a few seasons ago.

Influential website Transfermarkt, for example, still suggest Chiesa to be worth over double what is being mooted as his price point.

Like the tentative interest in Leny Yoro earlier this summer, the contract of Chiesa is an important component, with Liverpool taking advantage of the situation in a, dare it be said, 'opportunistic' way.

The former Portsmouth midfielder grew up in Italy and has maintained an interest in Italian football both personally and professionally.

Hughes even attempted to get Roberto de Zerbi into the hot seat while at Bournemouth before a lag in ownership allowed Brighton to pounce and the sporting director's intrinsic knowledge of Serie A and the modest sum involved limit the odds on the move for Chiesa representing a gamble.

Busy day at 'la AXA'

?

Tuesday was a busy day at Liverpool's AXA Training Centre as a whole host of players were involved in a promotional event involving some of the club's commercial partners.

One of the gents toilets were out of use while Luis Diaz filmed the latest advertisement for grooming partners Nivea while Japan captain Wataru Endo, bizarrely, was being asked to wish people a merry Christmas at the end of one particular interview.

Diogo Jota, Ryan Gravenberch and Conor Bradley were also completing media duties while Nat Phillips was also at the club's £50m training base for what could be one of his final days ahead of the transfer deadline on Friday.

Liverpool's new agreement with Swedish robotic firm Husqvarna is already visible across the club on a day-to-day basis with the grounds at both senior and academy levels being kept ship-shape by what appear to be battery-operated lawn mowers.

Husqvarna's remarkably quiet products have already earned praise from some members of the press who previously have had to deal with the loud and often intrusive noises of chundering lawn mowers when sending in audio and video pieces from both Anfield and the AXA Training Centre in recent years.
