Why Liverpool may get big transfer fee for free agent Trent Alexander-Arnold this summer

Liverpool could still bank a transfer fee for Trent Alexander-Arnold this summer, even though his contract expires at the end of the season.

Alexander-Arnold has been at Liverpool since he was six, but the right-back is being tipped with a move to Real Madrid.

Los Blancos had attempted to sign Alexander-Arnold in the January transfer window, but Liverpool laughed off a £20million offer.

It looked as if it would be the final chance the Premier League side had to bank a fee for the Englishman, given he’ll be free to join a new club for free when his deal at Anfield expires.

However, because of an extraordinary rule change sanctioned by FIFA, Liverpool could still cash in on Alexander-Arnold before his deal officially runs out on June 30.

That’s because Real Madrid are believed to want Alexander-Arnold for this summer’s Club World Cup in the States, with FIFA having given the green light to a mini-transfer window in the build-up to the tournament for competing clubs.

It would give those playing at the Club World Cup a chance to bolster their squads between the end of the domestic season and the start of the tournament, which is due to get underway on June 15.

Given it's only 15 days between the tournament’s first match and Alexander-Arnold’s contract expiring, it’s unlikely Real Madrid would be willing to splash out big to get him in early, but from a Liverpool point of view, it would still be better than nothing.

That’s if Alexander-Arnold is committed to leaving the club to begin with.

Manager Arne Slot hasn’t given up on the prospect of Alexander-Arnold penning a late extension, with the Dutchman insisting he’s in regular contact with the academy graduate.

When asked about the future of Alexander-Arnold, as well as fellow soon-to-be-out-of-contract duo Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk, Slot said earlier this year: "I speak to them a lot.

It's a non-stop process talking to your players.”

Alexander-Arnold made his senior Liverpool debut in 2016 and has since featured over 340 times for the club.
