Why Liverpool only play one Premier League match in March

Liverpool fans might feel like they’re sat about twiddling their thumbs in March.

The Reds are currently fighting on two fronts, with a second Premier League title in five years in their sights, as well as a seventh Champions League triumph.

Arne Slot has managed to pick up where Jurgen Klopp left off following the German’s Anfield exit last season.

But a quick scan of Liverpool’s calendar shows the Premier League and Champions League hopefuls aren’t in action all too often.

Slot’s side are only in action four times across the month - a tally that includes both legs of their Champions League last-16 tie against Paris Saint-Germain.

The reason for the lack of matches is two-fold.

Firstly, Liverpool were dumped out of the FA Cup by EFL Championship side Plymouth Argyle in the fourth round, meaning they won’t be in action during the first weekend of March.

But because of the way the fixture list has fallen this year, there are two separate FA Cup rounds being held in March - one either end of the month.

On top of that, the month also sees the return of international football, with World Cup qualification set to begin in March.

It means Liverpool's only Premier League match of the month will come against Southampton at Anfield on Saturday, 8 March.

Liverpool’s title credentials will be tested somewhat this weekend when they face the - albeit wounded - reigning champions Manchester City.

Speaking about the title race ahead of the contest, he said: “Biggest question to ask is for Man City because we face a strong team again, like Villa.

We cannot look at other teams, we know it is hard to go the Etihad, so we don't need Arsenal to be involved even more.

"What I always expect from City since Pep is there: a great team who can play so well.

We will have to suffer and work hard to keep them away from our goal, but they face a strong team who haven't lost for 22 games."

Liverpool remain in top spot ahead of the trip to Manchester, with kick-off in the City game pencilled in for 4:30pm.
