Liverpool extended their lead at the top of the Premier League table to 16 points with a 3-1 comeback win over Southampton.

However, just six minutes into the second half, Darwin Nunez drew the Reds level before the forward was brought down for a penalty three minutes later.

Mohamed Salah converted the spot-kick before he scored, yet again, two minutes later from 12 yards out after the video assistant referee spotted a Yukinari Sugawara handball.



However, eyebrows were raised when Jarell Quansah was brought on with a couple of minutes of the game remaining.

Quansah was actually Liverpool's sixth change of the afternoon, which is one more than the five that is normally allowed.

But the reason why the Reds were given an extra alteration is because Jan Bednarek was replaced in the first-half with Southampton as a result of a concussion.

In 2021, the Premier League agreed to bring in the International Football Association Board's (IFAB) additional permanent concussion substitute rules.

The Premier League website states: "If the referee stops a match for a potential concussion injury to a player, then the medical staff of that player's team will enter the field of play to make an assessment while the tunnel doctor will review video footage of the incident.

"The team doctor will have as much time as is required to make an on-pitch clinical assessment of the player.

If there are clear symptoms of a concussion, or video provides clear evidence of concussion, then the team will be permitted to apply to replace the player with an additional permanent concussion substitution."
