Diogo Jota’s controversial goal was allowed to stand despite his Liverpool teammate Luis Diaz straying into an offside position in the build-up.
The opener, just before the hour mark, broke the deadlock in an increasingly tense Merseyside derby and came with Everton continuing to provide a threat.
But it punctured the visitors’ momentum and sparked anger and frustration given the sight of Diaz standing beyond the last Blues defender.

Jota twisted past Everton players before sending Jordan Pickford the wrong way and the home end into delirium.
But there were clear questions from Everton, with Jarrad Branthwaite among the players who had their arms up in expectation the goal would be pulled back for an offside.
Jota collected the ball after James Tarkowski’s scuffed interception fell in his favour.
The Everton captain’s intervention was inspired by the presence of Diaz behind him, who was in an offside position.

But after a VAR check, the goal was allowed to stand.
The ECHO understands officials in Stockley Park ruled that Diaz did not impact Tarkowski and his ability to play the ball, and therefore did not believe the on-field decision should be overturned.
