Ibrahima Konate’s contract situation has emerged as another pressing concern for Liverpool, with the French defender confirming he has received an extension offer but remaining coy about his intentions.

As the Merseyside club navigates already complicated negotiations with Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, and Trent Alexander-Arnold, Konate’s uncertain future adds further complexity to Liverpool’s contract landscape.

The 25-year-old center-back, whose current deal runs until June 2026, has acknowledged receiving a contract extension proposal from Liverpool but has yet to commit his future to the club.

When directly asked in a January press conference if he had been offered a new deal, Konate replied with a simple “Yes,” but deflected when pressed on whether he was close to signing: “That’s another conversation.

Complicating matters for Liverpool is reported interest from European heavyweights Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid.

In an interview with French outlet Telefoot last month, Konate said on interest from the two clubs:

“Hearing big clubs like that being interested is very flattering, but now I’m focusing on this season; I want to win everything – take as many titles as possible.”

“Then everything that happens in relation to my contractual situation – it’s my agents, my advisors who take care of that.”

But while French outlet Le Parisien have now claimed that PSG have denied their interest in the player, they have also provided a slightly worrying report on the matter.

They have asserted that Konate has still not signed a deal, and is in ‘no rush’ to do so:

“The French central defender, bought from Leipzig for €40 million in the summer of 2021, has an offer from his directors who hope to see him stay for many more years, but he is taking his time and has not yet expressed a clear choice for his future.”

“Back to his best, he does not seem to want to rush things and should instead make a decision in a few months, at the end of the season.”

Some have suggested that Konate is waiting for the likes of Salah and Van Dijk to make their decision before committing the prime of his career to Anfield.

But what is now a worrying trend for the management of Liverpool is letting their key players enter the final years of their contracts.

By the end of the season, Konate will be in the same boat as things stand – starting the 2025/26 season with questions around his long-term future at the club.
