Former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso has a 'gentleman's agreement' to join one of his former clubs as manager.
Bayer Leverkusen CEO Fernando Carro has revealed that he could leave the German club to take over a club he represented during his playing career.
The Spaniard was heavily linked with the vacant Liverpool managerial role in the summer, prior to Arne Slot's appointment as head coach.
The speculation arose during a period where Leverkusen were challenging for a historic Bundesliga crown, as well as being on course for a treble with their sights on the Europa League and domestic cup.
Alonso had been one of the leading contenders to replace Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool after the German confirmed in January 2024 that he would step down in the summer after nine seasons.

Following the March international break, the Spaniard announced that he had decided to remain with Leverkusen, spurning interest from the likes of the Reds and another of his former clubs - Bayern Munich - in the process, but with uncertainty surrounding Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti, his future is back in the spotlight.
"In a few weeks, we'll know if there's a coaching change at our clubs, but the fact is that we're a very professional club and we have to be prepared for anything," Carro revealed.

"From the moment we signed Xabi, we knew he was going to be a great coach, and from the moment you sign one, you have to prepare others.
We have a gentleman's agreement, and if a team he's played for comes along, we can sit down."
When asked about the prospect of the former Liverpool midfielder taking over at Anfield, Klopp said: "One part I can speak about, a young manager being at a club where he’s doing really well.
"I was in a similar situation, and did pretty much the same if you want.
Leverkusen has a good team, will probably keep their team together.
Do you think he is staying at Leverkusen because he thinks it is too quick?
