According to the Athletic, representatives of Xabi Alonso have held talks with Real Madrid this season about the possibility of him succeeding Carlo Ancelotti as head coach this summer.

While Ancelotti remains under contract until 2026 and has reiterated his desire to stay, speculation about his future persists.

The Italian is reportedly aware of the discussions involving Alonso and understands that his position could hinge on winning either La Liga or the Champions League this season.

Alonso’s stock as a manager has risen dramatically since taking over at Bayer Leverkusen in October 2022?

He guided the club to their first Bundesliga title, along with triumphs in the German Cup and Supercup, and even reached the Europa League final last season.

His dynamic coaching style, ability to develop young players, and deep understanding of Real Madrid—where he played from 2009 to 2014—make him an attractive candidate for Los Blancos.

While, at the time, Alonso was seen as a natural successor to Klopp, Liverpool’s leadership ultimately decided on Arne Slot after the Spaniard declined their advances.

Slot, who joined from Feyenoord in June 2024, has exceeded expectations in his first season at Anfield.
