Alexis Mac Allister has suffered a tough season for Liverpool and there could be a transfer decision to make in the summerJurgen Klopp may be long gone from Liverpool, but his love for the club - and his former players - remains very much evident. The ex-Reds boss was at it again this week when wishing the best for all of his old charges at the forthcoming World Cup in North America.Among those sent regards was Alexis Mac Allister, who Liverpool snapped up in 2023 six months after helping Argentina be crowned world champions for the third time in Qatar. But that there is debate over where the midfielder will be after the latest tournament highlights how his future has become increasingly uncertain the longer this season has progressed. What, then, would be the best course of action for Liverpool this summer?

Having pushed himself potentially among the best midfielders to have played for the Reds during the Premier League era with his first two campaigns at the club, this term has been seriously underwhelming. It hasn't helped that, while Liverpool as a whole have struggled, Mac Allister began the campaign having missed out on a proper pre-season due to the hangover from the injury that curtailed his efforts earlier in the year. There has been a sense the Argentina international has been playing catch-up ever since. And while he has featured in all bar two games all season - no player has made more appearances for Liverpool - he has never consistently sparked, despite some flickers of promise in early November and in late January and February.Saturday's win over Crystal Palace, then, was intriguing in that Mac Allister operated alongside Dominik Szoboszlai at the base of midfield and was able to assist two goals - albeit one unintentionally - for the first time in a single match since Boxing Day 2024.He appeared much more like his old self and was still competing hard deep into injury time to lay on Florian Wirtz's clinching strike. But it's telling that with Ryan Gravenberch having penned a new long-term deal and Dominik Szoboszlai in advanced discussions over doing likewise, talks are very much not ongoing with Mac Allister over a fresh contract despite soon entering the last two years of his present agreement. At 27, Mac Allister is a little older than his fellow midfielders and has perhaps one more big-money move left in his career.

Real Madrid have regularly been linked, and there has been no secret about his desire to play in Spain at some stage.Mac Allister will surely be in better form next season, meaning there would be absolutely no qualms with him remaining in the Liverpool squad. The Reds need as many quality players as possible. But if a big money offer - say in the region of £50million-plus - comes in for the midfielder, Liverpool should be compelled to shake hands and thank Mac Allister for his impressive service while using the money to further evolve the engine room.Mark JonesHaving been so central to their World Cup victory in Qatar, a success that put him on the map in many ways, Mac Allister will be determined to give everything to help Argentina defend their crown in the US, Canada and Mexico. He gave his all en route to Liverpool winning the Premier League title last season too, but the intensity he has played under from the winter of 2022 right the way through to the end of last season, and that glorious, title-clinching goal against Tottenham, does seem to have come home to roost in this campaign.
