Despite the historical interest, David Ornstein has played down Liverpool making a move for Anthony Gordon this summer. Image Credits: Imago ImagesLiverpool won’t look to broker a deal for Anthony Gordon this summer, with the player also not desperate to make a return to Merseyside according to David Ornstein. The BBC reported earlier this week that Newcastle is prepared to cash in on the England international if they miss out on European football, with Gordon one of several premium assets who could be sacrificed to fund a rebuild on Tyneside. The Geordies are understood to want in excess of £70 million and, with four years still left to run on his current deal, any buyer will have to dig deep. It’s a big reason why there has been noise around the English international, with Liverpool among the clubs cited as interested thanks to their historical attempts back in 2024 amid Newcastle’s PSR issues at the time. However, writing in an Athletic Q&A session, the David Ornstein has suggested that Liverpool won’t seek a move for Anthony Gordon despite Hugo Ekitike’s lengthy injury lay-off:“I’m not sure there truly is a favourite at this point [for Anthony Gordon] because it is still so early.
Bayern’s interest is not new and we know the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool have coveted him previously, too.”“There are plenty of suggestions around the industry that Bayern could be the direction of travel – but I imagine they would need to shift somebody because they wouldn’t want Gordon as a back-up and he won’t want to go somewhere as a back-up.”“I don’t know of him being at the top of Arsenal’s list and from what I hear a move to Liverpool is not on his or their agenda, even after the Ekitike injury. Newcastle seem open to a sale but at the right price and if the reported £80m is true, that will not be easily achieved.”For now, then, talk of Anthony Gordon finally making the move to Anfield will have to remain in the realms of fantasy rather than expectation.
Unless something drastic changes in the months ahead, Liverpool’s focus appears to be elsewhere in the market, even if supporters will keep one eye on how the saga develops on Tyneside. anthony gordon David Ornstein
