Nico Schlotterbeck has been on Liverpool’s radar for some time and could be an option to replace the outgoing Ibrahima Konate. Image Credits: Imago ImagesBorussia Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck could be an option for Liverpool this summer, DaveOCKOP.com can reveal. On Thursday night, the disappointing news came through that Ibrahima Konate would be leaving Anfield upon the expiration of his contract on June 30th – the same deal he signed when he joined the club from RB Leipzig in 2021.Despite the Frenchman seemingly relaxing fans by suggesting he was close to an extension in April, he is now expected to depart with the likes of Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, and Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea keen to try their luck.It would be no surprise to see Liverpool dip into the transfer market for defensive reinforcements despite Jeremy Jacquet’s £60 million arrival from Rennes. We reported towards the end of 2025 that the Reds had serious interest in Nico Schlotterbeck.
The club were in dialogue with his representatives and that dialogue had been positive. His representatives have previously visited the AXA Training Centre during this past season. The German international did show signs of being unhappy with the direction of Borussia Dortmund during the 2025/26 season, but ended up signing a new contract at the club in April that extended his stay until 2031.Crucially, that new deal is believed to hold a release clause valued between 50 and 60million euros according to reports in Germany. Furthermore, Liverpool is thought to be one of the select few clubs around Europe that have access to this release clause, with the likes of Bayern Munich and Real Madrid also enjoying this distinction. The fact that it took him quite a long time to agree to extend his stay with the Bundesliga side suggest that the exit clause was more than likely the sticking point, and there was plenty of noise that he would not end up signing.Nevertheless, the 26-year-old is heading to the World Cup with Germany this summer, meaning no decision is likely to be made until after then.Schlotterbeck made 37 appearances across all competitions for Borussia Dortmund last season, impressing with five goals and two assists from defence.
