Liverpool’s current team has more than a few glaring gaps which Andoni Iraola and the recruitment team failed to fully fill in during the summer transfer window.Right-back, central midfield and right wing were all areas in which supporters wanted to see further additions brought in, but none were forthcoming. How Liverpool could do with a Trent Alexander-Arnold, a Steven Gerrard or, whisper it, a Mohamed Salah to sort them out. All three are former Reds stars who could add plenty to Iraola’s team, and each were put forward – along with others – as fans debated which departed Liverpool player they would re-sign on TalkingPoints this week.
Liverpool four-grid Steven Gerrard would complete Iraola’s LiverpoolAsk Liverpool supporters for the biggest weakness in their team right now, and most would likely agree that the midfield is the area which still needs work. Add him alongside Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai or even Ryan Gravenberch, and the former captain would instantly make them better.READ MORE: Liverpool fans are about to find out why Virgil van Dijk has not yet been offered a new contractMuch in the way Virgil van Dijk does with his centre-back partners, Gerrard could raise any player’s level in midfield, and having him there to pick up the slack from any of Iraola’s three main starters would make Liverpool a much better team.It is also probable that Gerrard could get more out of Florian Wirtz.
Wirtz would find a player who could play off him, while charging ahead of him to give another option for a forward pass.Gerrard could even do a stint at right-back if needs be, not that he would especially want to, but the Champions League winner was better at full-back than any of Liverpool’s current choices. Would Fernando Torres really be necessary instead of Alexander Isak, for example, with the same question applying to Luis Suarez.Andy Robertson is a potential option at left-back, but there are still high hopes for Milos Kerkez, while Iraola is sorted with his goalkeeper and centre-backs.Sadio Mane may be another to come under consideration, but Bradley Barcola could yet become a superstar at Liverpool, and they have other players on the left wing as well. So, while you could make an argument that each and every one of these players – and others besides – would improve Liverpool and give Iraola a better chance of succeeding, the answer is clear: bring Gerrard back and watch the Reds’ midfield flourish.
