Juventus have reportedly cooled their interest in Alisson Becker and have instead turned to David De Gea of Fiorentina. Image Credits: Imago ImagesFor the best part of the last month, one transfer storyline has refused to go away: Juventus and their pursuit of Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker.Reports linking the Brazilian with a return to Italian football have been circulating since early April, with Italian outlets going as far as claiming that the 33-year-old had already given his blessing to a potential move to Turin. The story gained enough traction that Liverpool moved to activate a one-year extension clause in his contract back in March, tying him to the club until the summer of 2027 and ensuring they would not lose him for nothing. That contractual protection, however, has not extinguished the speculation.
Juventus were still said to be working on a deal, with Tuttosport reporting a potential fee in the region of €15 million as the basis for any agreement. Now, though, it appears that the deal is becoming increasingly complicated. The sticking point appears to be financial.Alisson currently earns €8 million per season at Anfield, a figure that would place him among the highest earners in the Juventus dressing room before the transfer fee is even factored in.
For a club that has had to be disciplined in the market in recent years, that total outlay is proving difficult to justify. As a result, Juventus are now said to be exploring a more cost-effective route.Former Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea – currently at Fiorentina on a contract worth €3.5 million per season – has emerged as a serious alternative.Fiorentina are reportedly open to selling in the region of €10 million to reduce their own wage bill, making De Gea a considerably more attractive proposition from a financial standpoint. The Spaniard has made 68 Serie A appearances over the last two seasons and knows the Italian game well.It is not a permanent closure of the door on Alisson, but the economics appear to be pushing Juventus firmly in a different direction.
