But Liverpool have long had high hopes for Nyoni, and after staggering his progression to the first-team, they now look certain that the time is right to permanently promote him.READ MORE: Liverpool fans decide whether Andoni Iraola will regret letting Curtis Jones leave for Inter MilanJones played 49 matches for Liverpool last season, and there will be big question marks over Nyoni’s ability to feature so regularly for the first-team. As for his quality, it should not be in doubt.During his 21 appearances for the Reds so far, and more recently in every single pre-season appearance this summer, Nyoni has looked like a player who could one day start for Liverpool.Though he did do well in fits and starts and has obvious qualities, there is an argument that Jones never really gave off the same impression.Photo by Jorge Horsted/News Images/NurPhoto via Getty ImagesThe 25-year-old had some good runs in the team, most notably under Jurgen Klopp at the back end of the 2022/23 campaign, but even then, there was a strong feeling that he could be upgraded upon.In Nyoni’s case, he currently is not the best option to start every game for Liverpool, nor should he be at 19.
But it is clear that he could give the Reds something they do not currently have on the ball, and if he can solidify that with an impressive season, the idea that he should be in Liverpool’s best midfield will grow. The easy solution here would be for Liverpool to go into the market and buy an expensive, ready-made replacement for Jones who could fill in as the fourth man in midfield, behind Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister. But in Nyoni, the Reds know they have a player who could still surpass each and every one of those players, not to mention Jones. This is the right move from Liverpool, and when Nyoni proves them right later in the season, every fan will have just about forgotten all about the academy product who is heading for the catwalk in Milan.
