Image Credits: Imago ImagesLiverpool defender Hannah Silcock was on the scoresheet as England women’s under-23s cruised to a 3-0 victory over Sweden in the final of the WU23 European Competition on Friday.The Young Lionesses produced a dominant display in Murcia to round off their campaign with silverware, with Silcock playing a key role at both ends of the pitch.The 21-year-old, currently on loan at Birmingham City from Liverpool, started in defence and helped England limit Sweden to very little in the way of clear chances.
Her standout moment came at the other end, though, when she rose highest from a corner to power home a header and make it 2-0, giving England a firm grip on the final.Silcock’s goal arrived after an early opener from Izzy Goodwin had put England in front and came before a third strike late on from Olivia McLaughlin wrapped up a convincing win.There was more Liverpool involvement in the XI, as forward Mia Enderby also started for England. Operating in an advanced role, Enderby was involved in several attacking moves and helped stretch Sweden’s back line before being withdrawn in the second half with the game effectively won.On the opposite side, Reds forward Alice Bergström represented Sweden, meaning three Liverpool players featured in the showpiece.
Bergström worked hard in attack as Sweden looked for a route back into the contest but was unable to find a breakthrough against a well-organised England defence and came off after 72 minutes of the contest.Silcock’s strike in Murcia is the latest example of Liverpool’s growing international footprint on the women’s side, with Fuka Nagano and Risa Shimizu both recently starring for Japan on their route to Asian Cup glory last month.It all comes ahead of a pivotal summer for LFC Women, with Wolfsburg forward Vivien Endemann already confirmed on a free transfer and fellow defender Sara Agrez also set to make the move to Merseyside.
