Few Liverpool players have come in for as much stick as Alexis Mac Allister this season. After being one of the Reds’ best performers during the Premier League title win in 2024/25, Mac Allister was unrecognisable for much of the following campaign.Sluggish off the ball and loose on it, the Argentine was a big part of why Liverpool‘s standards dropped so dramatically. 10 reportedly felt that he was being targeted during the course of the season. Sadly for him, Liverpool fans just will not agree.Mac Allister was not being unfairly targetedNobody wants to see players take criticism on such a regular basis, and there is obviously a point at which constant negativity towards one or two becomes scapegoating. As The Athletic report on Thursday, Mac Allister felt that this is what had been happening to him throughout the season. They claim that the 27-year-old thought that he was being ‘unfairly singled out’ for his performances, which were continuously bad.Photo by James Gill – Danehouse/Getty ImagesREAD MORE: Confirmed: The players Liverpool will be missing this pre-season while they try to win the World CupWhile others around him were, of course, culpable to varying degrees, it is untrue to suggest that they somehow escaped criticism, or to claim that disappointment over Mac Allister’s displays was somehow unjust.Ask any Liverpool supporter to name their top three most disappointing performers of the season, and the former Brighton man would likely to be named in every single list.Clearly, this was not deliberate from Mac Allister, and nobody is suggesting that it was, but his level dropped alarmingly from August all the way to May, and it helps nobody to sit around denying that.Instead, Mac Allister would be better served looking at what went so badly wrong this season and doing whatever necessary to ensure that next year is better.

He needs to do more to show it.There have obviously been rumours that Mac Allister could be sold this summer, and though plenty of supporters would now be happy to see that happen, the preference should still be that he can step back up and show himself to be one of the best midfielders in the Premier League. The first step towards that should be to take accountability for the drop in standards of 2025/26, and to accept that better must be delivered moving forwards.
