The Reds spent close to £500m acquiring the likes of Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike, but although there has been some positive signs from all those players, it is difficult to argue with Jamie Carragher, who called it the worst transfer window in Premier League history. What has arguably tipped it over the edge is that neither full-back addition – Jeremie Frimpong or Milos Kerkez – have looked anywhere near good enough to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson. Jeremie Frimpong offered to Al Hilal Frimpong always looked like a slightly awkward fit at right-back for Liverpool, and between difficulties with his form and a number of injury struggles, it is fair to say that supporters’ doubts over the Dutchman very much remain.
He has been sidelined for the past three weeks with another hamstring issue, and although it has been claimed that Frimpong has been passed fit to face Crystal Palace on Sunday, he will be given more time to continue his recovery until after the international break. In the meantime, WinWin report that he has already been offered to Saudi side Al Hilal – presumably by his agents rather than Liverpool – as he looks for a change of scenery.
Former Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes, who signed Frimpong 18 months ago, is in charge of recruitment at Al Hilal, and though the transfer has not exactly worked out well so far, it seems that the pair could link up once again for another try. Liverpool reportedly retain faith in Conor Bradley as their long-term right-back, and though there is certainly a role to play for Frimpong until the Northern Irishman returns, it feels like a parting of ways in the summer might be the best decision for everyone.
