Image Credits: Imago ImagesWealthy Liverpool supporters are being given a rare chance to own pieces of club history as Anfield great Steve Nicol puts some of his most treasured medals and awards up for auction.The collection – which will go under the hammer in London between late April and mid-May – includes his 1986 FA Cup winner’s medal, European Cup winner’s medal from 1984 and even his prestigious Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year trophy.Nicol’s 1985/86 FA Cup medal, earned in the famous 3-1 win over Everton at Wembley, is expected to fetch between £10,000 and £20,000, according to the BBC.The former righy-back’s European Cup medal from the penalty shootout victory over Roma in 1984 – where he featured from the bench in the Stadio Olimpico – is also tipped to attract bids in the five-figure range.The FWA Footballer of the Year award he claimed in 1989, after an outstanding campaign in which he filled multiple positions with distinction, is likewise part of the sale.Signed by Bob Paisley from Ayr United, Nicol joined Liverpool in the early 1980s and remained at Anfield until 1994, amassing 468 appearances and 46 goals in all competitions.
During that time he helped the club to four league titles, three FA Cups, a League Cup and that 1984 European Cup.He was named in Jamie Carragher’s all-time Liverpool XI.Nicol said: “It means a great deal to know they’ll continue to be appreciated for years to come.”Alastair McCrea, a specialist at Propstore (one of the world’s leading entertainment memorabilia auction houses), said: “It’s not often that material of this quality and provenance becomes available” while expecting “strong interest from collectors and football fans around the world”.Featuring more than 50 items from his illustrious career, the auction is scheduled to run from April 21 to May 14, 2026.After hanging up his boots, Nicol forged an impressive second act in the United States, establishing himself as one of Major League Soccer’s most influential early coaches.He first joined the New England Revolution coaching staff as an assistant in 2002 before taking over as head coach later that year, a role he held until 2011. During that period he guided the Revs to multiple MLS Cup finals in the mid-to-late 2000s and became renowned for building competitive sides on modest resources.
