Image Credits: Imago ImagesThis stage of the football calendar is always tinged with emotion, as clubs across the game publish retained lists, confirm departures and begin reshaping their squads for the new campaign ahead.Liverpool is no different, and as attention starts to turn toward what comes next, there is also a moment to recognise those whose journeys in red are coming to an end.The Anfield club have officially confirmed that defensive duo Gemma Bonner and Gemma Evans will leave Liverpool FC Women at the end of the 2025/26 season, with the pair set for an Anfield farewell in the final Barclays Women’s Super League fixture against Arsenal.Bonner departs as a genuine club great, the all-time leading appearance-maker for Liverpool Women in the WSL era, having racked up 186 games across two spells and captained the side to back-to-back league titles earlier in her career during 2013 and 2014.Her exit comes at the end of her current deal, with head coach Gareth Taylor paying tribute to what she has meant to the club:“A fantastic servant for Liverpool Football Club. [It is] Something to be really proud of, particular the amount of appearances in the two spells she had at the club.”“Obviously I was fortunate enough to be able to coach her at Manchester City also.
For us she has just been a real ambassador for the football club, on and off the pitch, and she goes with our best wishes because she has given a lot to the club,” Taylor said.“We really appreciate everything she has done on and off the pitch to drive this club forward. [She] Had a lot of success and has obviously had a real big effect on a lot of people.”“So, really proud of her achievements and she has been a real stalwart of the club for a long time.”Evans, meanwhile, will move on two years after arriving from Manchester United, having added experience and versatility across the back line and as a Welsh international with more than 80 caps.Like Bonner, her contract expires at the end of the campaign, and she has attracted serious interest, with Newcastle United in talks over a summer move as they look to bolster their WSL 2 ambitions. Both players will be honoured at Anfield on Saturday, as Liverpool supporters get the chance to show their appreciation before the club embarks on the next phase of its evolution under Taylor.
