Those Liverpool supporters who stayed up to watch Thursday morning’s win over Wrexham in New York may have headed to bed feeling a little cheesed off.After Sunday’s 4-2 win over Sunderland, fans could have been forgiven for expecting a little more excitement from the 1-0 win.Nevertheless, there were still some interesting things to take away from the performance at the Yankee Stadium, with Andoni Iraola’s use of Rio Ngumoha hinting that Liverpool are expecting their move for Bradley Barcola to ultimately be successful. Photo Credit: Getty Images/Liverpool FC Iraola uses Ngumoha from the rightOn Wednesday it emerged that Liverpool are preparing a £100m offer for Barcola, and are hoping to come to a compromise with Paris Saint-Germain, whose asking price is significantly higher.While the Frenchman is clearly a very good player, Liverpool supporters have been a little confused by their club’s attempts to go so big for his signature, mainly because he usually plays on the left side of the attack.Iraola is instead crying out for a right-sided forward, given Liverpool lost Mohamed Salah and did not really have a great deal in reserve for the Egyptian before he left, meaning fans have been baffled as to where Barcola could fit in.But against Wrexham, Iraola hinted at the plan, deploying Ngumoha on the right of the attack when he came on at half time to win the game for Liverpool at the Yankee Stadium.READ MORE: Liverpool player ratings vs Wrexham as Rio Ngumoha is the match-winner in New YorkPhoto by ANGELA WEISS / AFP via Getty ImagesThe 17-year-old is a strong candidate to start in the Reds’ attack next season, and if Liverpool do sign Barcola – and do not add another right forward – it is easy to see him being Iraola’s first-choice.That feeling was reinforced on Thursday, with the Reds potentially planning to add Barcola to the left, and go with Rio on the right.How did Ngumoha play on the right?Although he was the match-winner in the end, this was not a vintage performance from Ngumoha by any means.Though we have seen him play well for Liverpool on the right in the past – most notably away from home against Nottingham Forest last season – he still looks much more effective when cutting in from the left.Nevertheless, his goal came from Ngumoha drifting infield with the ball, and he can still cause panic amongst defenders with his quick feet and unpredictability.The youngster perhaps does not quite offer the pace to be a touchline-hugging winger, however, and there will remain a worry about the balance of the attack if no left-footer joins.What is clear now, though, is that Barcola is very much Liverpool’s main target to add to their front line.

It is highly unlikely that they’d buy the France star and then switch his position, so we have to assume that he is being signed to play on the left.Though it remains to be seen how negotiations with PSG play out, Liverpool are clearly already planning for this eventuality, and while things obviously need to be polished up, Barcola joining the Reds is a really exciting prospect.Cody Gakpo, Victor Munoz and even Federico Chiesa may have something to say about it, but Barcola on the left and Rio on the right is starting to look like the long-term plan for Liverpool.
