Man City has tabled a bid worth $161 million (£120 million) for Elliot Anderson, but Nottingham Forest rejected the transfer offer and is holding out for even moreElliot Anderson during the England vs Costa Rica friendly in Orlando, Florida.(Image: Eddie Keogh - The FA via Getty Images)There may appear to have been something of a lull in transfer activity in the last few days, just as the World Cup begins, but make no mistake: a potentially important domino has fallen.According to The Times, Manchester City's latest offer for the Nottingham Forest and England midfielder Elliot Anderson was worth $161 million (£120 million), including add-ons. Eye-watering as that number is, it wasn't enough, because the Midlands side wants a British record fee guaranteed. The bid was worth an initial $142 million (£106 million), which would be higher than Arsenal's move for Declan Rice, with the rest being made up in further installments depending on performance. The highest transfer fee paid so far in the Premier League was Alexander Isak's $169 million (£125 million) switch from Liverpool to Newcastle, but it doesn't look like that record will stand for long. While there is no suggestion that Liverpool was ever seriously considering a play for Anderson, if it is to enter the midfield market this summer, the first marker from which other deals can be pitched has been set. This week has seen talk of Bournemouth valuing Alex Scott at around $107 million (£80 million), for instance, and Mateus Fernandes, who was relegated with West Ham, is viewed as someone who could fetch even more than that.Mateus Fernandes of West Ham and Alex Scott of Bournemouth could both move on this summer.

(Image: Richard Pelham/Getty Images)No doubt, the fees for those players — and maybe Adam Wharton and others — will have been influenced by the sky-high valuation of Anderson, who moved to Nottingham Forest for $47 million (£35 million) two years ago.Liverpool star Curtis Jones, with only one year left on his contract, has interest from elsewhere, though it remains to be seen if a change of head coach can convince him that there might be more minutes available.Alexis Mac Allister, meanwhile, coming off the back of a below-par season and with no contract talks having taken place, is another who could attract suitors. And if either of those players — or indeed anyone else — was to leave, then Liverpool would simply have to dip into the market for a replacement. And there is an argument that Liverpool helped inflate the market last summer by committing so much on Isak and Florian Wirtz. Each of those players, though, is an attacker, for one thing, but also with a much higher pedigree.Anderson has never played in the Champions League, while Fernandes has been relegated in each of the last two seasons. Scott didn't make the England squad for the World Cup.Between the trio, though, if they are to move this summer, it will cost a combined total of around $400M.Needing quantity as well as quality this summer to ensure that Andoni Iraola has a deep enough roster, it is something that Liverpool will have to consider.
