Liverpool legend & former number eight has claimed that while he is excited to see the Reds under Andoni Iraola, there are clear gaps in the squad that need to be addressed.Victor Muñoz is Liverpool's only summer signing at the moment, and although Jeremy Jacquet was signed in January, Ibrahima Konate's departure still leaves the Reds light in defensive reinforcements.The new number five has also yet to feature for Liverpool, after not being risked for any of the games during the US tour, where Iraola's side returned back to Merseyside with two wins and a 4-2 defeat which came agaonst Leeds United.The Reds have been linked with Bradley Barcola all summer, and there have also been new rumours surrounding PSG's Ibrahim Mbaye and Illia Zabaryni, too.The latter of which was at Bournemouth with Iraola before his move to the French capital.Neverthless, the lack of movement so far in the transfer market has worried Gerrard.Speaking to Open Goal sport, he said:"Listen, I'm happy with it [Iraola's appointment], but I also know the challenge that is in front of him."The former midfielder added:"I think Liverpool were miles off it last season. If we're really honest, they were miles off.
The squad needs some surgery and it needs to address some balances."A Liverpool legend of his stature speaking out in this manner, alongside Iraola's own pleas for transfers, should be a wake up call to club that in-comings are needed if the Reds are to challenge across all fronts this season.And in order to do so, Gerrard added that those at the club already need to get back to the levels expected of them:"We need to get some players back fit and firing, and big players in big form.
