It’s that he shouldn’t have to be burdened with major responsibility when he’s only starting out on his senior career.Instead, Richard Hughes should be looking to the market for a proven high-level number 6 who’s already operating in a major league in Europe.Which defensive midfielders could Liverpool look to sign?Adam Wharton would be an ideal candidate, but convincing Crystal Palace to sell him at this stage would be exceptionally difficult.The Reds could possibly turn to astute options from the continent such as Lamine Camara (Monaco) or Angelo Stiller (Stuttgart), who mightn’t have Premier League experience but would be considerably less expensive than the Eagles midfielder.

However, to not pursue a defensive midfielder at all would be downright negligent.It isn’t melodramatic to claim that failing to resolve the matter could cost us Champions League football for 2027/28.
Even a Newcastle team shorn of several key players from last term were able to cut through us at will on Sunday – imagine what Arsenal or Manchester City could do to us.Those two will almost certainly finish inside the top four, while Chelsea are likely to be much improved on 2025/26. Manchester United and Aston Villa may have lost last weekend, but both made light of slow starts to last season to finish third and fourth respectively.Even if England gets a fifth Champions League place again, Liverpool could face a battle with overachieving sides like Brentford and Brighton for that position.The Anfield hierarchy have only a few days left to either address the number 6 issue or risk missing out on the riches that qualifying for Europe’s premier club competition provides.
