A Liverpool midfielder has unfortunately withdrawn from the Republic of Ireland squad for a World Cup qualifier this weekend. Liverpool midfielder Denise O’Sullivan has pulled out of the Republic of Ireland squad after suffering a knee problem, ruling her out of their Women’s World Cup qualifier against the Netherlands.

The experienced Ireland star picked up the issue earlier in the week and, despite trying to play through it, the injury has now proved serious enough for her to return to her club for further assessment. Republic of Ireland manager Carla Ward confirmed on Friday as quoted by the BBC: “Denise has returned home to Liverpool with that knock on her knee so won’t be available tomorrow night,” Ward said.

“We have a squad that are well equipped on how we want to play so our approach won’t change but when you lose someone of Denise’s quality – she really is world class and makes a huge difference to what we do – naturally, that’s a big loss.” “The approach will stay the same because the players, the group, everyone knows what we want to do and they’ll all be prepared for that.” O’Sullivan has not missed a competitive international since sitting out in 2024.
