Milos Kerkez already knows exactly what Andoni Iraola will want from his full-backs at Liverpool.Iraola is set to replace Arne Slot this summer, once again linking up with Kerkez after the pair previously enjoyed a positive spell together on the books of Bournemouth. The left-back has improved since he first arrived at Liverpool, but Jeremie Frimpong’s lack of defensive ability remains a concern, and the Hungarian has already warned that any full-back who wants to play under the Spaniard must be good around his own box. Rate Andoni Iraola’s Liverpool appointment!

If you’re not a good defender, you’re not going to play or compete for trophies.“Last season I had to work on my defensive awareness, to not switch off.
I now stay focused for the whole game and I believe I’m doing both pretty well this season.“If you want to be a full-back with Andoni Iraola, you have to be like this. I’m really thankful he has trusted me.”Well, from what we have seen from Frimpong at Liverpool so far, he really falls down when it comes to defensive work.To be honest, exactly why Richard Hughes and co. decided to buy the Dutchman in the first place is hard to say.Frimpong is an absolutely brilliant wing-back, excelling for Bayer Leverkusen in the past when he was used in a back-five.However, he has never been one of the top full-backs in the world and did not perform well in a back-four under Arne Slot.Slot even started using him as a winger at times last season, despite Liverpool having no other actual fit right-backs to select. So, unless Iraola switches to a three/five-man defence in 2026/27, it is unlikely that Kerkez’s former manager will want to play Frimpong regularly next term.Alternatively, as Jamie Carragher has already suggested, Frimpong could be used as a right-winger behind a new signing.Join Our NewsletterReceive a digest of our best Liverpool content each week direct to your mailbox
